Fifth Person On The Scene

The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

PSALMS 34:7

Back in April, my siblings and I were driving home from the place where my sister works, which is an animal rescue center. A friend and fellow Believer had gone with us, following in her car, to see the animals that had been rescued.

It was dark out and around 9:30 or 10 at night. We were approaching a curve in the road, but right before we were about to reach it, the headlights of our van (which was carrying me and my two older sisters) suddenly shone on a black car that was coming at us in our lane, going 50 or 60 miles per hour. The car swerved in an "S" shape right in front of us, and because it flew over a hill, did not have any lights on and was black, we didn't see it until it was too late.

I remember slamming into the car and going into the ditch on the side of the road. I blacked out for a second or two, and when I came to, the airbags were in my face and I could hear my sisters screaming. I clambered out of the front passenger side door and saw that my oldest sister, who had been sitting behind me in the car, was all right. I heard my other sister, who had been driving, screaming and saying she couldn't move. I ran over to her side of the car and saw that the metal was twisted around her foot. I got her foot out and got her out of the car.

Meanwhile, our friend, who had been driving behind us, had called 911. The driver of the other car had gotten out and yelled, "Is everyone okay?" and then ran away. My sisters, our friend, and I all gathered around and started praying. The emergency vehicles and my parents arrived a few minutes later and we were all taken to the hospital. We were checked out at the hospital and, by the grace of God, the worst injury was my sister's sprained ankle caused by the metal being wrapped around her foot from the impact.

For some reason, though, the police officers and emergency personnel kept asking us, over and over, if we were completely SURE that there were only four of us at the scene of the crash after the other driver fled. They also kept asking us our names and ages. All of the men who interviewed us INSISTED that there was another man there besides me (and I'm not even a man--I'm only a teenager). We told them time and time again that the only man there was me, and they were very confused by all this. Finally, my mother asks them why they keep insisting that there was another man there.

It turns out that the paramedics driving the emergency vehicles had seen a man standing next to us when they pulled up, which is when we were praying! At first we thought that it was only me, my sisters Emily and Sarah, and our friend Naomi standing on the road praying...but according to the other witnesses, there was a fifth man on the scene!

I continually thank God for protecting us that night. The paramedics said that we all could have been injured much, much worse.

Praise be to God!

"The Bible said so: "The Angels of God are compassed—are camped about those." They don't go back to heaven; they camp there. They're sent on missions to watch you through life's journey. Oh, isn't that wonderful?"
